Julian's VISIT TO POLAND, the country of his roots.
September 1989
Julian was 23 years old.

Polish airlines LOT Julian went to Poland in 1989 — the year of historic changes in Poland.

It was only 3 months since Solidarity Movement won control of the government in limited free elections and formed the first non-communist government in 75 years history of the dictatorial Soviet empire. The election set off a chain of events in neighbouring countries and within six months communism in Central Europe was defunct.

The Polish communists still tried to rule as a minority. General Jaruzelski, former dictator and Soviet puppet, became "democratic" president. Inflation was very high.

Below is one of the Polish People's Republic banknotes still in circulation. The eagle on the note - a national symbol - is still without the "bourgeois" crown.

But the following year in 1990 Lech Walesa was elected president.

The Red Army occupation troops remained in Poland until the time of total collapse of the Soviet Union in 1992 - 1993.

Julian brought home a souvenir banknote from the socialist "worker's paradise". Useless Polish currency, same as Russian communist rubles. This one worth one loaf of bread.

This is the castle where Julian's first ancestor, a 20 year old knight Lukash - a courtier in Wawel castle, attended upon the Polish king in 1540. Cracow was then the capital of Poland.

In 1546, Lukash was rewarded with a land property called RYMA on the Polish Eastern Frontier, and
moved to live there at the age of 26. See Chapter 12 : Ancestors
