FAMILY TREE REPRESENTATION ON WEBSITES

Browsing through some genealogical websites I found that diagrammatic representation of family trees is not very suitable for web pages. The tree diagrams are too large for the screen so the relationship and generational continuity soon become unclear and diagrams print in disjointed pieces.

• The solution I thought up for my website is very simple. Why not identify each person by giving him a number of his genetic sequence. Then, by using hyperlinks, one can quickly find by the individual I.D.number details of any person in the tree and see its family relationship.
  
• To identify each member of your family you start with your earliest ancestor about whom you have some information. Assign him any number to identify his family. I suggest a two digit number over 50. This will become the family tree number (FNo.) which will pass to each descendant.
  
• The children of your original ancestral family are numbered 1,2,3, etc. in order of birth. And their individual identity (ID) numbers will be FNo.1, FNo.2, FNo.3, etc.
  
• The same follows with the next generation. The children of, for example FNo.3 will have their ID numbers FNo.31, FNo.32, FNo.33, etc.
  
• And so the descendant's individual identity number will grow by one digit with each generation. For ease of reading long numbers a dot is placed after each 4 generations (i.e. after each 4 digit groups), e.g. (FNo. = 88)  88.1233.1222.1 - In our digital age and bar coding long numbers will not present a problem.
  
• If the descendant marries his ID number will also become his family's ID number and he will continue the numbering of children in the same way (keeping their original family tree number before the first dot).
  
• The wife is allocated the same number as her husband with added letter "w" for "wife".
  (Similarly, if it is required to include a husband of a married daughter he could be given the same number as the daughter with letter "h" for "husband").

EXAMPLE OF MY METHOD

• Thus, for example, my grandson Noah Rymaszewski has his own ID number 66.1233.1
  His family tree branch number has been chosen as 66.
  
• Noah can easily trace back his family tree, as the ID numbers of all his direct ancestors are included in his own number.
  
• Noah's father and mother have the same number as Noah less one digit, that is 66.1233 and 66.1233 w  - Julian Rymaszewski, born in London, and Natalie Irwin, born in Australia.  It is also his parents family number.
  
• Noah's grandfather has the same number as Noah less two digits, or one digit less than Noah's father, i.e. 66.123 - Franek Rymaszewski, born in Poland, who was the third child of Noah's great grandfather 66.12 - Michal Rymaszewski from Pinsk, Poland, etc.
  
• The length of the number after family tree dot shows how many generations have elapsed since his family forefather lived. Comparing number length of other family members, he can see that e.g. 66.1242.1 & 66.1242.2 are his distant cousins in Poland - Michal and Adrian, being of equivalent generation.
  
• Other relatives can be deduced from his number, e.g. Noah can find on the website particulars of his father's brothers or sisters. They would have similar number to his father's 66.1233 but different last digit, i.e. 66.1231 - his uncle Lucian Rymaszewski and 66.1232 - his auntie Celina Rymaszewska.
  
• To find more details, all Noah has to do is click on the appropriate link.

• The symbol on the left indicates that a person is now living.
• Clicking on the label "more" will link to the first chronological location of that person.
• If applicable, further link marked "more" is provided to the next location, e.g. first link to the person as a child, then as a parent of a new family.
